ICO Company Profile and Background

Headquartered in Pretoria South Africa, Incline Conveyor Operations (ICO) is the Sole appointed distributor, manufacturer and distributor of the ICO Conveyor Belt Arrestor (CBA) by the Patent Holder – The Viviers Familie Trust. The Conveyor Belt Arrestor is being used by most leading mining companies in Southern Africa, Africa, Europe, Canada and China. ICO was formed to market and manufacture a product that was proudly invented and designed in South Africa and globally. ICO was founded in 2005 and has as its sole mission and purpose the marketing and manufacturing of ICO Conveyor Belt Arrestor.

ICO converted from a CC (formed in 2005) to a (Pty) in 2105.

ICO is the sole licenced company to distribute and install the ICO Conveyor Belt Arrestor with Patent Numbers: Patent Numbers 1997/11189 and 2016/08191

Safe, Reliable and Tested providing mining companies with a safety devise that improves productivity.

ICO’s mission is to enable users of any incline conveyor belt:

  • To reduce the risk of injury or fatalities due to a conveyor belt breaking and the belt and material rolling back down the incline.
  • The Conveyor Belt Arrestor also improves productivity as it reduces down time cause by broken belts by up to 90%.
  • The Conveyor Belt Arrestor reduces damage to the existing incline conveyor structure caused by a belt and material rolling down the incline following a broken or snapped belt.

ICO meets these goals by the marketing and manufacturing of the Conveyor Belt Arrestor that enables users of conveyor belts the opportunity to reduce their risk associated with conveyor belt operation and improving the productivity of the mine.

Benefits of the Conveyor Belt Arrestor

Mining and manufacturing companies around the world are looking for ways to improve productivity, reduce costs while improving their safety record. The Conveyor Belt Arrestor was designed and developed by a specialist in the field of conveyor belts with over 30 years of mining experience. The Conveyor Belt Arrestor was initially designed to prevent the resulting chaos from a broken incline conveyor belt. Additional benefits of the Conveyor Belt Arrestor soon became apparent and are benefits sought after by most world class mining companies:

  • Safety of the employees – A recent study by the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee on the “Best Practice : Conveyor Belt Systems” concluded that a cause of fatal accidents on incline conveyors was due to: “Sufficient stopping devices not installed along the length of the belt”. The Conveyor Belt Arrestor directly addresses this issue and has been tried and tested by not only most leading mining companies in South Africa but also by the CSIR. The Conveyor Belt as a 100% record in both the field and the laboratory. The cost of one fatality due to the breakage of a conveyor belt can run into millions of rand not to mention the irreplaceable cost of a human life.
  • Improved productivity – The Conveyor Belt Arrestor directly contributes to improved productivity of operations with incline conveyor systems by drastically reducing the downtime normally associated with belt breakages. ICO is aware of reductions of up to 90% which roughly translates to a time saving of up to 48 or more hours to repair a broken belt, due to the close proximity of the two broken ends caught by the Conveyor Belt Arrestor (CBA). Another productivity benefit of the Conveyor Belt Arrestor (CBA) is that it prevents the misallocation of valuable resources to repair the broken belt and remove tons of debris that has rolled down the incline shaft.

Reduces damage to the Conveyor System Structure – Anybody who has witnessed the result of a broken incline conveyor belt will agree that damage to the Conveyor System Structure is more than likely and can run into thousands if not hundreds of thousands of rand. The Conveyor Belt Arrestor (CBA) reduces the possibility of this damage by catching the broken belt and the material on the conveyor within seconds after it has broken, preventing the belt and debris from running down the incline shaft.

Why the ICO Conveyor Belt Arrestor?

The ICO Conveyor Belt Arrestor is unique in that it is the only mechanical devise worldwide that will stop the belt from rolling down the incline once the belt has snapped The ICO Conveyor Belt Arrestor (CBA) is virtually maintenance free and will outlast the lifespan of any incline conveyor shaft. The ICO Conveyor Belt Arrestor (CBA) is manufactured from SABS material and tried, tested and certified by the CSIR. The CBA will work on any incline from 9 to 35 degrees and can be manufactured from any size of conveyor belt from 500mm to 2200mm.

The ICO Conveyor Belt Arrestor (CBA) is manufactured from laser cut profiles of up to 20mm thick that are MIG welded by certified welders to ASME code for export to international markets.  The standard finish includes but is not limited to anti-corrosive epoxy coatings to the highest international standards. ICO is proud member of the Conveyor Manufacturers Association and ICO Arrestors have the CE Mark Complaint.

Modular construction allows for easy transportation and simple assembly of the components at the installation site.

ICO is further the applicant in respect of the following patent applications:

Patent Co-operation Treaty patent application number PCT/IB2015/056935 entitled “Conveyor belt arrestor system”, claiming priority from:

South African patent application number: 2016/08191 entitled “Conveyor belt holdback”; and South African patent application number: 2016/08191 entitled “Conveyer belt arrestor”.

Comprehensive and Mature Product Offering

The Conveyor Belt Arrestor (CBA) was invented in 1997 and has undergone testing (CSIR and SABS) and redesign to ensure that it is performs under the worst possible conditions. ICO has installed in excess of 350 Conveyor Belt Arrestors in Southern Africa and various other countries across the world.
